Baldies rule the world! By Katelyn Oates

My name is Katelyn Oates and my instagram is @thatssokxtelyn.

I’m from Chicago but I’m currently in Phoenix because I go to Arizona State University! I’ve been a baldie since September 2nd, 2019.

I cut my hair because it is super hot in Arizona and managing my hair was too much, especially considering there aren’t that many ethnic beauty supplies around.I also love doing different things to my hair so I thought it would be fun to try!

The first time my hair was cut, I did it myself. I had braids in, took them down and I grabbed some clippers and went to work. It looked good! I bleached it myself shortly afterwards. But my first time at an actual salon getting it cut was fun because I knew the girl cutting it, so I was excited.

The funniest thing somebody told me about being a baldie was about how often I would be called Amber Rose, and to get prepared for the amount of people who would palm my head like a basketball. BUT...

"They were absolutely right"

My biggest challenge being a baldie would have to be finding a good barber near me. The girl who cut my hair was back home in Chicago. I tried some barbers here in Phoenix and they sucked, so I cut it myself when I’m in school.

Ever since I cut my hair I’ve felt like

SUPER WOMAN!

Being a baldie to me means embracing myself more and being more confident.

I feel more mature and comfortable with myself and when you look good you feel good! Being a baldie helps me embrace my natural features more.

My advice for anyone trying to go bald is if you have a super tiny feeling about doing it, do it! It feels free and fun. Also, youtube and a nice pink silky durag are your friends.
